Snared by Jennifer Estep

About SNARED:
If you don’t know Gin “the Spider” Blanco, you don’t know dangerous female heroines.

Irony 101—The Spider herself snared in someone else’s web…

Another week, another few clues trickling in about the Circle, the mysterious group that supposedly runs the city’s underworld. Gathering intel on my hidden enemies is a painstaking process, but a more immediate mystery has popped up on my radar: a missing girl.

My search for the girl begins on the mean streets of Ashland, but with all the killers and crooks in this city, I’m not holding out much hope that she’s still alive.

A series of clues leads me down an increasingly dark, dangerous path, and I realize that the missing girl is really just the first thread in this web of evil. As an assassin, I’m used to facing down the worst of the worst, but nothing prepares me for this new, terrifying enemy—one who strikes from the shadows and is determined to make me the next victim.

My Review:
Like her namesake - Gin just keeps getting better with age!

As an dual elemental, Gin can control not just one, but two elements - stone and ice. This ability has helped her survive many a misadventure as well as her career as a top-notch assassin in the deadly city of Ashland. She's gone from working for her mentor Fletcher to working for herself to becoming the mob boss for the city due to having killed the previous 2 bosses. Retired - and now trying to take down the circle - Gin gets pulled into a manhunt for a serial killer... like Ashland didn't have enough troubles they can now add a serial killer to the list.

Her circle of friends has also grown from 3 or 4 trusted individuals to more like 10 close friends; several other good acquaintances; and several business frenemies - who would love to have her gone almost as much as they need her near. It takes cooperation from all of her friends - and maybe some of those frenemies to not only unravel the mystery of the crimes being committed, but to also survive her latest endeavor. Solving this crime will save lives and solve several cold cases Bria has been trying to close.

Excerpt:

Since it was January, the holidays were officially over, but someone was being a little slow about putting away the decorations. White twinkle lights were still wrapped around the thick columns that supported the sprawling, two-story, gray stone mansion, along with strands of illuminated snowflakes that glowed a pale blue. Still more lights and snowflakes curved over the stone archways and outlined all of the windows, which also had white velvet bows hanging in them.

But this was a New Year, with new targets for the Spider.

I crossed the lawn and hunkered down behind some lounge chairs set up on the patio that ringed the heated pool, as far away from the cheery glow of the holiday lights as I could get. Then I peered around the chairs and over at the mansion.

Despite it creeping up on eight o’clock, lights burned in every room on the first floor, and I spotted several servants moving back and forth, tidying up and doing their final chores for the night. In the windows closest to me, two women plucked red and green glass balls off a massive Christmas tree that took up most of that room.

I watched the women work for a few seconds longer, as well as all the other servants, but no one moved toward the windows and looked outside. No one had seen me approach the mansion, so I raised my gaze to a particular window on the second floor. Lights burned in that room as well, but I didn’t spot anyone moving around inside. Excellent.

I glanced over my shoulder, but the guard was at the very back of the lawn now, several hundred feet from me, and still playing his game, judging by the faint beeps and trills that whispered into the night. I wouldn’t get a better chance than this, so I slid my knife up my sleeve so that I would have both hands free. Then I surged to my feet, got a running start, leaped up, and grabbed hold of a trellis attached to part of the mansion.

BOOK BLAST! Nice Guys Bite by Jennifer Estep

I'm really excited today!  Nice Guys Bite hits e-readers everywhere.  Unfortunately, I do not have a review for you yet as it will be hitting my kindle at the same time this post hits my blog, but I am sure - like all of Gin's exploits - this read will be action and sarcasm packed!

NICE GUYS BITE takes place after the events of UNRAVELED (#15). It is told from the point of view of Silvio Sanchez, Gin’s personal assistant. Working for Gin Blanco (aka the Spider, the assassin who runs the Ashland underworld) doesn’t leave much time for romance, especially with Gin’s holiday party planning in full swing. But when he catches the eye of a charming gentleman, Silvio finds himself going out for coffee. All’s fair in love and war, though. Just as Silvio is starting to enjoy himself, he realizes he’s being watched. His nice-guy date doesn’t sense the danger, and Silvio wants to keep it that way (and, well, keep the guy alive) so Silvio ends the date early—only to be abducted by some villainous giants. Will Silvio survive the night and make it back to the Pork Pit in time for Gin’s holiday party? Only if he decks the hall with bodies …

Unraveled Blog Tour (Unraveled by Jennifer Estep)

Welcome to my little slice of the online book world!  I am excited to once again be hostessing a blog tour stop for the ever-awesome - Gin Blanco... errr - I mean Jennifer Estep!  Book #15 in The Elemental Assassin series finds Gin and her closest friends once again attempting to take a small vacation.  I think we ALL know how that's going to go!  lol

SYNOPSIS

What could go wrong when you’re trying to unravel a decades-old conspiracy?

As the current queen of the Ashland underworld, you would think that I, Gin Blanco, would know all about some secret society controlling things from behind the scenes. I might be the Spider, the city’s most fearsome assassin, but all my Ice and Stone elemental magic hasn’t done me a lick of good in learning more about “the Circle”. Despite my continued investigations, the trail’s gone as cold as the coming winter.

So when Finnegan Lane, my foster brother, gets word of a surprising inheritance, we figure why not skip town for someplace less dangerous for a few days? That place: Bullet Pointe, a fancy hotel resort complex plus Old West theme park that Finn now owns lock, stock, and barrel. At first, all the struttin’ cowboys and sassy saloon girls are just hokey fun. But add in some shady coincidences and Circle assassins lurking all around, and vacationing becomes wilder—and deadlier—than any of us expected.

Good thing this assassin brought plenty of knives to the gunfight…

MY REVIEW
This book picks up almost exactly where Unwanted left off.  Gin and Finn are still trying to come to terms with the mess left behind by Mama Dee - Finn's mother.  Gin now has many questions regarding the mother she thought she knew, and Finn is trying to come to terms with the complete lack of feeling from his mother.  Finn & Gin decide it is time to unlock a safety deposit box - one that Gin found the key to in her mother's grave.

The box only reveals a very vague clue which frustrates Gin to the extreme so Finn decides to spring another surprise and proposes a short vacation for the two of them and their significant others... to a theme park he's just inherited from Mama Dee.  So, despite Gin's reservations about another attempted vacation, off go Finn, Bria, Owen, and Gin.  And, you can kind of guess what happens.

Like the other stories in this series there is action, violence, friendship, loyalty, and sarcasm - a perfect combination to keep you reading.  I love Gin's wit, her ability to stay alive when most wouldn't, and her ability to win new friends when they are needed most.  Jennifer's writing is imaginative, complex, and entertaining.  If you haven't read any of this series yet, you really need to!

Unwanted Blog Tour! (Unwanted by Jennifer Estep)

I am SOOOO excited today!  I'm hosting my first ever blog tour stop, and it's for Jennifer Estep!  For those of you who aren't familiar with her work - why ever not?!  I haven't yet found a book she's written that I didn't like.  Her Bigtime series for adults is on my TBR pile.  My daughter has devoured her Mythos Academy series and Black Blade series (which I also got to read part of), and my all-time favorite is her Elemental Assassin series - I MAKE time to read anything Gin!  So let's get started!

UNWANTED
The New York Times bestselling Elemental Assassin series continues with a new e-novella--from the point of view of Finnegan Lane, the foster brother of Gin Blanco, and a fan favorite of readers of the series.

The fallout from his disastrous “family reunion” in Bitter Bite has left Finn feeling hurt, angry, and depressed. He can barely stand to look at himself in the mirror, much less eat any of the delicious barbecue from Gin’s famed Pork Pit restaurant.

But when the funeral for a slain security guard at his bank turns into a showdown with some nasty underworld giants, Finn knows that he must act in order to protect an innocent family.

Finnegan Lane might be the most unwanted man in Ashland these days, but he’s determined to try to make amends for his past mistakes

MY REVIEW
Long-time (and new) fans of Gin - have you ever wondered what Finn was TRULY thinking?  Here's your chance to find out!

After the (deserved) death of his mother, Finn is having trouble with self-recriminations and guilt.  He is unwanted.  His co-workers have all made it plain that they blame him for his mother's crimes and the death of so many of his co-workers.  His boss has insisted he attend every single funeral - not that he wouldn't have on his own.  New security measures are now in place at the bank - for obvious reasons - and, in general, he is having trouble moving on.

Enter a grieving widow with a young son, and a big-time issue due to her brother-in-law.  Finn learns of her trouble and offers to help, but - like the rest of the people his work-related life - she blames him for her husband's death and refuses it.  He doesn't care, and does his planning anyway.  Finn's not an elemental, but he was raised by his father - an assassin - and has helped Gin out enough times to know what and how to plan.

You'll have to read the novella to find out the rest!  And, I suggest you do that now!

While short, (It IS a novella folks!) Unwanted packs an emotional punch like any of this series.  There is always a twist that it is hard to see coming.  Jennifer's attention to detail and imagination are a true pleasure to read no matter the length of the work.

Bitter Bite by Jennifer Estep

Bitter Bite (Elemental Assassin, #14)Bitter Bite by Jennifer Estep
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

** I received an e-ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**

This book is beyond AWESOME!

Gin and company are at it again! This time Fletcher left parts of a puzzle for Gin to find in order to help Finn because his mother is back in town and up to no good. Gin is determined to help Finn - even if Finn doesn't want to listen. There are several interesting flashbacks in this book, and Gin learns more about her mother than she probably wanted to.

Overall a terrific read that kept me going when I really should have been asleep! Jennifer's ability to draw the reader in and make you empathize with the characters is awesome. And, yes, there were tears shed during the reading of this book!
